I. Position Function:

In collaboration with the department chairman, anesthesia staff. The chief technician will set objectives for the support team, supervise work patterns, designate all tasks, standards, and procedures that provide support to the practice of anesthesia in a safe and efficient environment. This will include the management of the pharmacy budget, ordering of supplies and equipment, organization of the work areas, and the maintenance of equipment and coordination and management of projects.

III. Authority:

The Chairman of the Anesthesiology (or his designee ) delegates authority and responsibility to supervise the activities, training and performance of the anesthesia support personnel, overall management and organization of the technical support department, its specialized functions and inventory. Authority for purchasing and management of pharmacy budget items, as well as responsibility for the monitoring and detailing expenses to the department cost center is provided through the director of operative services and the manager of the department's clinical area.

The Chief Technician will have the authority to sign off on time sheets, procedures, receipts, etc. Request data, information or records relative to the position's area of responsibility, information path, and fiscal requirements. Communicate with the management staff, evaluate practices and procedures in all relative areas and report/advise to pertinent authority with the goal of improving work flow, budgetary outcomes, utilization or resources, and enhancements to client/patient services. Authority to initiate change in immediate service area with proper consultation and/or collaboration with affected parties when necessary.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Supervises technical support staff and manages daily workload in coordination with anesthesia staff, clinical objectives and needs.

Inspects work area and equipment preparation daily for meeting clinical objectives.

Consults with anesthesia staff and residents daily for special support requirements or problems.

Develops technical support assistance in conjunction with clinical staff for complex invasive procedures such as pulmonary artery catheterization, fiber optic bronchoscope, high-volume fluid replacement/warming for blood loss cases and OR code situations, and ensures that technical staff are fully competent to assist in all situations deemed necessary by the clinical anesthesia staff, participates in daily technical assistance routines, support of the anesthesia staff.

Responds to technical/equipment problems in the operating room and obstetrical suites, troubleshoots and resolves situations in a manner that avoids interruption of surgical/anesthetic procedures and ensures patient safety and staff safety.

Equipment: Anesthesia machines, bulk medical gases, and electrical systems, anesthetic vaporizers, ventilators, physiologic patient monitors, respiratory gas monitors, open heart monitoring systems, oxygen monitors, pulse oximeters, nerve stimulators, blood/patient warmers, fiber optic bronchoscopy with camera video unit and display, and all the other anesthesia equipment used in the operating room.

Calibrates all equipment requiring in house servicing.

In conjunction within, and with the support of the main lab, supervises the lab services within the anesthesia area.

Configures software-driven systems of all clinical anesthesia equipment, setting up screen choices, menu items, alarm limits, parameters measured and parameters thresholds, measurement ranges and clinical values in consultation with clinical staff.

Maintains, updates and managers an organized anesthesia pharmaceutical operation of approximately 15 case cart tray system along with the obstetrical suite inventories.

Assists in devising annual department budget through analysis and detail of items, employee salaries, cost and usage patterns of supplies in a database, equipment purchases, and first level maintenance.

Inventories supply base and stock locations, purchasing supplies as needed.

Evaluates products for department use, while consistently seeking to streamline inventory and reduce costs. Contact person for manufacturers' product representatives.

Responsible for overall management and organization of department for the operating room.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

Assist in special projects, research, etc.

Facilitate movement of office furnishing, books, etc.

Other duties as required in the department.

V. Reporting Requirements:

Reports as necessary on budget to administration. Identifies impacts to cost center.

Reports all equipment malfunctions and status/ resolution, if any, to staff anesthesiologists.

Will evaluate technicians strengths/weaknesses and assist in remedial training.

Reports all events/changes in work schedule, emergencies, etc. in the clinical area.

VI. Accountability:

Shall be accountable for providing detail to department chairman and/ or administrator for clinical area on any deficiencies in technical department performance, technical staff performance, budget problems, and any other situations that have an impact on the department and the care of its patients.

Shall be responsible for knowing hospital policy, guidelines for conduct, patient safety, rights and confidentiality.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education: College level education or technical school training/certification, (academic certification or on-site)

Minimum Experience: Ten years in hospital setting with at least five years in an OR/Anesthesia role. Technical background in equipment care and maintenance specializing in anesthesia equipment and monitors.

Minimum skills/abilities: Complete familiarity with all anesthesia procedures, invasive monitoring, all types of clinical anesthesia equipment, Ability to operate and service anesthesia equipment. Skills in setting up and assisting in all aspects/types of invasive anesthesia monitoring.

Certification/Licensure: Certification in anesthesia technical field a plus.

Special Qualifications: Excellent organizational and communication skills, Biomedical equipment training
