POSITION SUMMARY

Assists with the age appropriate nursing care of the patient in the Operating Room and Day Operative Center. Functions as a member of the surgical team, as a scrub technician. Assists with the preparation of supplies and housekeeping duties. Functions under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.

ACCOUNTABILITY

The Surgical Technician is directly accountable to the Nurse Manager Surgical Services.

QUALIFICATIONS

ò Graduate of an approved school.
ò Certification as a surgical technician
ò American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required.
ò Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to maintain patient confidentiality.

RESPONSIBILITIES

ò Demonstrates skill as the primary scrub technician during surgical procedures.
ò Demonstrates appropriate care and use of sterilizer.
ò Assists during surgical procedures as second assistant holding retractors.
ò Assists in carrying out the nursing care plan as defined by the registered nurse.
ò Demonstrates appropriate technique when handling sharps.
ò Maintains aseptic technique, wears proper personal protective equipment and handles contaminated waste properly.
ò Utilizes resources to promote and maintain a safe environment for patient care.
ò Demonstrates safe & effective use of equipment.
ò Demonstrates knowledge of fire safety, emergency & infection control policies.
ò Demonstrates interest in and seeks opportunity to learn new skills.
ò Assists in the preparation of the surgical suite for surgery by stocking supplies, cleaning the room and preparing instruments for reprocessing.
ò Demonstrates ability to maintain composure while working under stressful conditions.
ò Performs other activities and duties as assigned.
ò Demonstrates flexibility in patient assignment and works schedule.
ò Reports to & begins work promptly.
ò Give adequate notice of absenteeism or tardiness.
ò Participates in Quality Improvement activities as assigned.
ò Follows Norwood Hospital policies.

DOCUMENTATION

ò Completes necessary portion of incident reports as needed.
ò Completes Assistant Responsibility sheets appropriately.

CLEANING & STOCKING

ò Facilitates room turnover.
ò Cleans O.R. suites after patient procedures utilizing appropriate technique.
ò Maintains neatness of storage area and returns equipment to proper place.
ò Empties laundry bags and replaces them.
ò Keeps utility rooms and sub-sterile/work rooms neat and clean.
ò Empties hazardous waste containers daily or as needed.
ò Restocks supplies as needed.
ò Orders supplies.
ò Empties and replaces Red Sharp Containers appropriately.
ò Notifies materials coordinator of supplies that are low.
ò Delivers used case carts to SPD.
ò Anticipates needs or equipment for the next scheduled procedure.
ò Prepares and positions equipment for surgical procedures as part of room turnover.
ò Orders supplies both internal and external.
ò Performs receiving function for OR inventory.
