Summary of Responsibilities:

The Resource Nurse provides support to the staff to ensure high quality safe patient care.


  • Registered to practice nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required
  • Demonstrated commitment to performance improvement and high quality care
  • Minimum of five years of medical-surgical or intensive care acute care experience
  • Demonstrated, high level, written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to form and maintain collaborative interpersonal and interdisciplinary relationships
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications, including Word, Excel, and Power Point and Meditech


Serves as expert clinical resource for staff:

  1. Serves as unit based educator, ensuring on-going clinical competence of staff and participating in annual required competency education and documentation
  2. Provides on-going education and reinforcement of current and new Hospital policies and procedures, including, but not limited to Wound Care, Restraints, IV care, Infection Control, Medication Safety and Handoffs
  3. Proactively engages staff in discussing and resolving patient care issues, identifying learning needs and providing hands-on assistance as needed
  4. Rounds with staff on all patients on a daily and as needed basis, to identify opportunities to improve patient care, assure including compliance to clinical policies and procedure, develop and revise care plans, and initiate patient and family teaching and documentation
  5. Provides oversight to RNs, nursing assistants and wing secretaries.

Collaborates with nurse director on unit issues:

  1. Collaborates with nurse director to assess specific learning needs of the staff, identifies gaps and develops and provides programs to meet those needs
  2. Collaborates with nurse director to ensure staff compliance with established policies and procedures
  3. Maintains ongoing dialogue with nurse director regarding clinical/staff/quality/safety concerns

Serves as liaison with the interdisciplinary team

  1. Maintains positive, collaborative relationships with all members of the team, including physicians, PAs, therapists and others
  2. Serves as liaison between disciplines to ensure optimum communication, patient care and compliance with discharge teaching requirements developed by interdisciplinary team
  3. Reviews medical record documentation including follow through of consultant recommendations and communicates with the MD/PA/NP as needed
  4. Attends daily provider rounds, encouraging staff nurses’ active participation

Actively participates in quality assessment and performance improvement activities

  1. Performs on-going quality monitoring activities as directed to ensure unit compliance with policies and procedures.
  2. Maintains knowledge of regulatory requirements related to patient care, including The Joint Commission and Department of Public Health/CMS.
  3. Takes steps to ensure unit compliance with these standards

In collaboration with the Wound Care Team, serves as unit-based wound and skin care resource

  1. Ensures unit compliance with Wound Care Policies and Protocols
  2. Monitors compliance with documentation requirements

Conducts daily unit rounds focusing on:

  1. Emergency equipment
  2. Environmental cleanliness including med rooms, patients rooms, equipment, discharge rooms, WOW’s, etc
  3. Glucometer maintenance
  4. Ongoing survey readiness
