POSITION SUMMARY

Within the framework of the philosophy and objectives of the Cardiology Department the exercise physiologist will, utilizing an interdisciplinary team approach, be responsible for monitoring and evaluating cardiac rehabilitation patients’ response to exercise and education. The exercise physiologist will develop an individualized exercise prescription for each patient and will modify that prescription when necessary. The exercise physiologist will assist with exercise stress testing as well as nuclear stress testing.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountable to the cardiology manager and director. Work collaboratively with physicians and medical directors. Staff are cross trained in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Cardiac Stress Lab and may rotate as necessary to meet patient care needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or registered physical therapist
  2. Proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office
  3. Basic ECG interpretation skills
  4. BLS Certification from American Heart Association required
  5. ACLS required
  6. Prior ECG and exercise testing experience
  7. Master’s degree in exercise physiology preferred
  8. AACVPR certification preferred
  9. Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist certification preferred
  10. Cardiac Rehabilitation experience preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES IN CARDIAC REHABILITATION

  1. CLINICAL EXPERTISE
  1. Implement and supervise therapeutic exercise sessions.
  2. Record exercise responses and report adverse reactions or clinical problems to the registered nurse.
  3. Monitor ECG telemetry.
  4. Provide initial and ongoing assessment of patients’ musculoskeletal and psychomotor skills and abilities.
  5. Modify exercise prescription according to patient’s response to exercise.
  6. Participate in patient education and counseling.
  7. Participate in patient care and team meetings.
  8. Document patient sessions and prepare discharge reports for distribution.
  9. Serve as consultant to the staff in area of expertise.
  10. Assist with the supervision and education of student interns.
  11. Maintain equipment in optimal working condition, reporting problems to appropriate individuals.
  12. Respond efficiently and appropriately to all emergent and non-emergent situations within the department.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned including inventory control and quality checks on equipment.
  14. Exhibit caring and compassion in all interactions with patients and families.

RESPONSIBILITIES IN CARDIAC STRESS LAB

  1. Demonstrate safe and effective use of ECG equipment
  2. Download and reconcile hospital EKGs
  3. Prepare ECGs for physician interpretation, ensuring accuracy
  4. Prepare and instruct patients prior to exercise testing
  5. Monitor and record patient information during exercise testing under direction of the physician.
  6. Maintain equipment in optimal working condition, reporting problems to appropriate individuals.
  7. Respond efficiently and appropriately to all emergent and non-emergent situations within the department.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned including inventory control and quality checks on equipment
  9. Exhibit caring and compassion in all interactions with patients and families.

  1. PROFESSIONALISM

    4. Current BLS and ACLS training.
    5. Attend yearly program on fire safety, infection control, and abuse awareness.
