The HIM Concurrent Inpatient Coder shall support hospital concurrent coding operations. The Concurrent Inpatient Coder shall review hospital inpatient medical documentation to assign, sequence, edit and/or validate the appropriate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes. The HIM Concurrent Inpatient Coder is required to work onsite in the hospital and attend all intra hospital case management or utilization management meetings. A provisional DRG must be assigned within 24 hours for all patients excluding normal newborn and/or normal obstetrical patients. Acute care admissions should be re-reviewed daily and sub-acute cases every other day.


  • Coding Technical Skills that include ICD-10-CM, MS-DRG and APR-DRG methodology
  • Candidate must display a superior knowledge of Coding Guidelines (Coding Clinic, UHDDS Official Coding Guidelines, CCI Edits).
  • Analytical Skills that include effective evaluation, synthesis and use of information gathered
  • Ability to maintain 96% DRG/APR accuracy rate
  • Experience with physician querying
  • Experience working with Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (CDI)
  • Assign a provisional DRG within 24 hours of admission
  • Acute care cases reviewed daily, sub-acute areas reviewed every other day
  • Ability to respond to coding questions from clinical providers
  • Candidate should have experience with Meditech and Cerner
  • Candidate must be self-motivated, display a high level of computer literacy, excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to meet assigned deadlines, and organized
  • The position will report to the HIM Inpatient Coding Manager
  • Ability to meet coding productivity standards


  • Minimum 1 year of Acute Inpatient hospital coding required, 3 years preferred
  • Comprehensive understanding of CCs/MCCs, impact on quality reporting, UHDDS guidelines, HACs and PSIs
  • Meditech and Cerner experience preferred
  • Microsoft Office (Word, One Note, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.


  1. Education: RHIT or RHIA preferred
  2. Experience: 1 year of Acute Inpatient Coding Experience
  3. Certification/Licensure: CCS Certification
  4. Software/Hardware: 3M experienced required
  5. Other: Onsite M-F, attend hospital based meetings. Work closely with CDI.
