Occupational Therapist, 40 HRs/Week, Day Shift (8:30AM to 5:00PM), Every Other Weekend, Holidays required, 2 Years of Geri-Psych Experience Required

Position Function:

Administers a variety of therapeutic procedures and agents utilized in the short and long term rehabilitation center of in and out-patient (orthopedic, neurological, pulmonary obstetrical, cardiac, medical and surgical) by staff physicians, house officers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, courtesy staff physicians, podiatrists, dentists and osteopaths.

Authority: -

Has the authority to select and perform all aspects of treatment and patient care within the guidelines of the hospital, under state and federal licensing regulations, and ethical and standards of care adopted by the AOTA.

A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Notes diagnosis of patient and takes all precautions for observing indications and contraindications; determines treatment to be administered.

Prepares or supervises aides in the preparation of patients for treatment via proper draping and positioning.

Evaluates patient's emotional and physical condition; explains treatment to patient/family/others; performs MMT and ROM/and any other tests as needed.

Applies or supervises aides in application of agents such as Hot Packs, Paraffin, Whirlpool, etc.

Administers and/or instructs patients in specific treatments by the use of therapeutic exercises, supplies and instructs patients in use of adaptive equipment used for bathing, dressing feeding or hand writing.

Evaluates and treats patients with cardiac and respiratory problems or a potential for same, as required, using various techniques and modalities as indicated; carries out instruction in energy conservation exercises, ADL training, teaching, and relaxation exercises.

Evaluates and treats for sensorimotor and perceptual deficits.

Fabricates a variety of resting and dynamic splints and adaptive equipment as specified by physician.

Evaluates patients during treatment to determine effectiveness and safety; reports to and recommends changes to physicians if indicated; discusses or clarifies order with referring physician; discusses problems with other staff members for input and ideas.

Instructs patients/families/ others as indicated in treatment goals, home programs and in-hospital self exercises.

Maintains records pertinent to patient evaluations and treatment; follows set guidelines for evaluation and record keeping.

Participates in rotation following current routine (i.e. inpatient, outpatient, hands, etc.).

Follows department policies and procedures; maintains a high level of safety for patients and property.

Assists, directs and instructs ancillary and other personnel as necessary.

Studies current trends and new developments in occupational medicine by survey of literature, attendance at professional meetings and conferences, and participation in department in-services.

Participates in the training of occupational therapy students from AOTA accredited programs after 1 year experience.

Participates in the TQM/CQI process through audits, peer review, CareMapping and other Quality Council approved activities.

Maintains standards set down by the AOTA regarding treatment procedure and professional ethics.

Participates in the development of new programs and clinical services.

Performs various other duties as assigned for as dictated by responsibilities.

Reporting Requirements:

Reports formally and informally to the Occupational Therapy Supervisor, who as the immediate supervisor, regarding situations that require his/her attention.

Reports immediately to supervisor any deviation in normal operations.

Reports immediately to supervisor any unusual occurrences related to patients, other staff, self or equipment.

Reports all incidents and breaches in the quality of care to the Director of Rehabilitation Services and the Risk Management/Safety Department.

Reports to Primary Care Physician/Referring Physician, any changes in the patient's condition warranting intervention.

Accountability:

Shall be accountable for selecting and performing all aspects of patient care as delineated by license, and governed by state, federal and standard setting organizations.

Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital related, staff related and patient related data and information.

Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital and department policies and procedures, including infection control.

Shall be accountable for patient care by non-licensed personnel while under their supervision.

Shall be accountable for proper patient identification by asking patient's name and checking ID bracelet.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Graduate of an AOTA accredited program.

Bachelor of Science Degree and/or certificate in Occupational Therapy

AOTA registered.

Minimum Experience:

None

Minimum skills/abilities:

Effective communication and educator skills.

Strong orientation to patient care in accordance with the medical center values, particularly the holistic approach to healing.

Ability to deal with stress due to a fast paced and growing environment.

Ability to manage within a flexible schedule.

Ability to work independently with sound decision making skills.

Certification/Licensure:

Massachusetts licensed or license eligible

Current CPR certification.

Training:

Willing to train in continuing education annually
