The Patient Advocate is responsible for working directly with patients and their families to discuss any account questions, complaints, comments, or suggestions. In addition, they will work closely with the Central Billing Office (CBO), as they are an extension of the processes and functions of the CBO. Patient Advocates will be held responsible in providing timely information and requests back to the CBO from the clinic. They will keep the physicians, CBO Management, Ops Directors and CEO updated of their challenges and progress on a regular basis. Demonstrates the knowledge and assessment skills necessary to communicate, educate, and provide a safe environment for specific age groups served. Must be able to respect diversity of each individual’s values, culture, spiritual beliefs, and other socio-economic issues in addressing the needs of patients, visitors, and co-workers. Participates in performance improvement activities.
Age of population served: Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric
Associates degree preferred. Minimum two years experience in customer service, with at least one year experience in a health care setting preferably as a medical biller or coder. Experience working with insurance companies with the ability to understand and read explanation of benefits or the ability to learn and demonstrate proficiency after successful completion of a training program.
Must be familiar with various computer software applications and type a minimum of 55 words per minute. Must become familiar with and learn to operate Medical Center computer system efficiently. Must have knowledge of health care field; medical practice, including clinic financial policies and reimbursement payment requirements. Must be able to analyze data, policies, and requirements used for clam submission, billings and payments. Must be able to defuse tense situations through diplomatic problem solving. Have the ability to effectively balance needs of clinics with the needs of the patient and CBO.
