Job Description


Responsible to Director of Pharmacy for compounding, dispensing and monitoring of drugs to patients of the hospital. Supervises work of pharmacy supportive personnel and pharmacy interns/externs/students.


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Pharm D.
  • Must be registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Must be willing to work in both the Stoughton and Carney Satellite locations


1. Compounds and/or dispenses medications mainly according to the Unit‘dose system, in order to fill medication orders written by qualified physician.

a. Reviews physicians' orders for proper dos­age, interactions, incompatibilities, etc.

b. Prepares intrave­nous admixtures, parenteral hyper-alimenta­tion, sterile dilution of chemo-therapy drugs, sterile irrigating solutions, and any other sterilely prepared injectable drugs performed under a lamina flow hood.

c. Pre­pares all special drugs.

d. Dispenses Workers Compensation and outpatient prescriptions to employees in compliance with Federal and State laws.

e. Dispenses controlled substances, maintaining records in com­pli­ance with Federal and State laws.

f. Properly labels drugs for patients who are on self‘admini­stra­­tion or Leave of Absence.

2. Provides information to physicians and other staff members on new drugs, adverse reactions, side effects and interactions.

3. Cares for patients of all ages (pediatrics, adolescent, adult, geriatric) and is knowledgeable of age specific physiological changes, developmental needs, and appropriate therapeutic inter­ventions.

4. Responsible for supervision of Code Carts and "Stat" boxes, with drugs and supplies re­filled and charged as the need arises.

5. Refills Night Pharmacy with drugs removed by the Admin Supervisors.

6. Assists with maintaining current pricing of drugs ­(manually or by computer)­.

7. Provides on‘call Pharmacy coverage after Pharmacy hours.

8. Represents Pharmacy on hospital committees if appointed.

9. Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of drugs, items used in preparation of intra­venous solutions and necessary ad­ministration sets. Purchases pharmacy inventory to include narcotics and other necessary drugs, equipment, and items to insure availability. When there is an established formulary, the pharmacist is required to adhere to that formulary or follow the established procedure for exceptions.

10. Supervises pharmacy technician students and also supervises pharmacy students in cooperation with the colleges of Pharmacy.

11. Performs with drug utilization reviews and adverse drug evalua­tions.

12. Complies with the MA requirements for continuing education ac­cording to the Board of Registration in Pharmacy relicensure regulations.

13. Performs any necessary clerical functions (manually or by com­puter), as well as any other assigned duties.
