I. Position Function:

Administers and directs administration of physical agents utilized in the short and long term physical rehabilitation of inpatients and outpatients (orthopedic, neurological, pulmonary, obstetrical, cardiac, medical and surgical) referred by staff physicians, house officers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and courtesy staff physicians, podiatrists, dentists, and osteopaths.

III. Authority:

Has the authority to select and perform all aspects of treatment and patient care within the guidelines of the hospital, under state and federal licensing regulations, and ethical and standards of care adopted by the APTA.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,
and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Notes diagnosis of patient and takes all precautions for observing indications and contraindications; determines treatment to be administered.

Prepares or supervises aides in the preparation of patients for treatment via proper draping and positioning.

Evaluates patient's emotional and physical condition; explains treatment to patient/family/others; performs MMT and ROM/and any other tests as needed.

Applies or supervises aides in application of agents such as: TENS, Ultrasound, Electrical Stimulation, Hot Packs, Paraffin, HVGS, Cervical and Lumbar Traction, Whirlpool, Massage, Biodex, etc.

Administers and/or instructs patients in specific treatment by the use of therapeutic exercise and ambulatory procedure; supplies and instructs patients in use of ambulatory aides such as crutches, cane walkers, etc.

Evaluates and treats patients with cardiac and respiratory problems or a potential for same, as required, using various techniques and modalities as indicated; carries out instructions in deep breathing exercises, coughing, huffing, ADL, pre-op and post-op teaching; performs evaluation with maintenance or corrective exercises; assists with progressive ambulation and performs facial and mouth exercises as needed.

Evaluates patients during treatment to determine effectiveness and safety; reports to and recommends change to physicians if indicated; discusses or clarifies order with referring physician, discusses problems with other staff members for input and ideas.

Instructs patients/families and others as indicated in treatment goals, home programs, and in-hospital self exercises.

Maintains records pertinent to patient evaluations and treatment; follows set guidelines for evaluation and record keeping.

Participates in quarterly rotation following current routine (i.e. inpatient orthopedics, outpatient clinic, general and surgical, inpatient neurology, inpatient cardiac, outpatient cardiac).

Follows department policies and procedures; maintains a high level of safety for patients and property.

Assists, directs and instructs ancillary and other personnel as necessary.

Studies current trends and new developments in physical medicine by survey of literature, attendance at professional meetings and conferences, and participation in department in-services.

Participates in the training of physical therapy students from APTA accredited program after 1 year experience.

Participates in the TQM/CQI process through audits, peer review, CareMapping, and other Quality Council approved activities.

Maintains standards set down by the APTA regarding treatment procedure and professional ethics.

Participates in the development of new programs and clinical services.

Performs various other duties as assigned or as dictated by responsibilities.

Reports informally and formally to the Physical Therapy Supervisor, who acts as the immediate supervisor, regarding situations that require his/her attention.

Reports immediately to supervisor any deviation in normal operations.

Reports immediately to supervisor any unusual occurrences related to patients, other staff, self, or equipment.

Reports all incidents and breaches in the quality of care to the Director of Rehabilitation Services and Risk Management/Safety Department.

Reports to Primary Care Physician/Referring Physician, any changes in the patient's condition warranting intervention.

VI. Accountability:

Shall be accountable for selecting and performing all aspects of patient care as delineated by license, and governed by state, federal and standard setting organizations.

Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital related, staff related, and patient related data and information.

Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital and department policies and procedures, including infection control.

Shall be accountable for patient care by non-licensed personnel while under their supervision.

Shall be accountable for proper patient identification by asking patient's name and checking ID bracelet.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Graduate of an APTA accredited program.
Bachelor of Science Degree and/or certificate in Physical Therapy.

Minimum skills/abilities:

Effective Communication and educator skills.
Strong orientation to patient care in accordance with the medical center's values, particularly the holistic approach to healing.
Ability to deal with stress due to a fast paced and growing environment.
Ability to manage within a flexible schedule.
Ability to work independently with sound decision making skills.


Massachusetts licensed or license eligible.
Current CPR certification.
