Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse utilizes all aspects of the Nursing Process in the perioperative setting. Policies/procedures as well as the AORN and ASPN standards govern their practices. The nurse can perform as a circulating nurse or scrub nurse. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrates comprehensive clinical knowledge in cardiac surgery patients.
  2. Assesses that pre-operative preparation is correctly performed on patients receiving elective, urgent and emergent cardiac surgery.
  3. Participates in performance improvement activities for the cardiac surgery patient and cardiac patient database. (STS)
  4. STS responsibilities include completion of pre-op STS Risk Stratifications, STS data abstraction, data submission, continued education/webinars, quarterly presentation of data and action plans for process improvement, monthly Cardiac M&M case preparation and meeting coordination.
  5. Cardiac Surgery Responsibilities include open-heart skills checklist and competency checks, surgery/procedure scheduling, coordination of pre-operative testing, staff education for pre-operative and post-operative care of the cardiac patient, family education, team rounding with surgeon, discharge planning/coordination with social services and follow-up phone calls after discharge.
  6. Participation in quarterly resuscitation committee, perform and evaluate mock arrests utilizing SIM Man quarterly, tracking evaluation of all chest pain alerts, RRTs and Code Blues to create action plans for deficiencies identified.
  7. Collaborates with nursing leadership as well as manages and oversees the workforce to ensure quality patient care services.
  8. Participate in Chest Pain Accreditation Committee, policy/procedure development, and staff/physician education.
  9. Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, co-workers, nursing management, and other departments.
  10. Oversees the regional provision of high-quality cost-effective care through direct participation, staff development, and patient teaching.
  11. Regional Cardiovascular representative for off-site events. (Health Fairs, etc.)
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • PA – RN License
  • Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing - BSN Preferred
  • 2 years Critical Care or PACU experience
  • CPR/BLS by AHA within 90 days of hire
  • ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire
  • Clearances as required by Federal and State law
