An administrative internship is an opportunity for full-time Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) students, generally the summer between the first and second year of studies, to gain critical work experience. This experience, which is also an academic requirement of their degree, is intended to provide them with exposure to the inner workings of a health care organization, to receive project and professional guidance from a knowledgeable member of that organization, and to apply their academic learning in the field.

The primary focus of the University of Utah’s MHA internship requirement is to provide students with exposure to administrative opportunities within organizations that focus on health services, public health, community health, health education, health policy, health information technology, and/or health disparities.

To the extent possible, we hope that interns will obtain exposure to the mission, structure, functions and decision-making processes of your organization. It is through an internship experience that students gain exposure to the numerous roles people play in an organization so that they can further their knowledge of what they want to do when they graduate and how to get there.

Internship Structure

Students participating in an administrative internship are required to complete the equivalent of about 450-500 hours work with a healthcare organization under the close guidance of their preceptor.

Internship hours are typically completed during a full-time, 3 month long internship, but, in some cases, students may elect to carry out their work part-time over a 2 semester long period with the permission of the MHA program director.

Internships are generally time-limited, project-based opportunities. Occasionally, the internship may entail a combination of a couple or more project-based assignments.

Student Internship Requirements

Students are required to enroll in 3 hours of academic credit, as the administrative internship is considered an essential part of their degree curriculum. They receive an internship guide at the start of their degree program, and the beginning of their internship, outlining the academic requirements of their internship experience which includes:

  • Meeting with potential preceptor and discussing the scope of the internship and start date.
  • Completing an Administrative Internship Goal Sheet, based on this conversation, within the first week of their internship, and submit it to the MHA Program Director.
  • Maintaining an Internship Reflection Log for each of the projects they work on during their internship.
  • Completing an Interim Report at the half-way point in their internship if completing the internship over multiple semesters.
  • Complete one or more projects for which they have primary responsibility. Present a report and make a presentation to their preceptor and other organization leaders.
  • Completing a Final Internship Report, consisting of a professional report, their Reflection Log, a portfolio of reports, brochures, presentation slides, or any other non-confidential material that will represent their experience as an intern.
  • Submitting a Final Self-evaluation of their internship experience relative to their initial goals.
